Ground Fire Ladders
Alaco's Tapered Truss Ground Ladders or Ground Fire Ladders began as an original design by Frederick Seagrave, who made wood orchard ladders before building fire ladders in 1881 in Columbus, Ohio.
Seagrave and his engineers wanted ladders that were:
- Very light for easy and fast handling
- Strong and tough to resist abuse
- Convenient to operate safely
- Stiff, with as little bounce as possible for quick, sure climbing
Although it wasn't much of an issue at the time, wood ladders also do not conduct electricity.
Seagrave's design was brilliant, even by today's standards. Over the years it was developed further by Los Angeles Ladder Company, and has been continually refined by Alaco.
Quality Construction
Constructed of Douglas Fir, Oak and Hickory woods with precision steel fasteners and hardware, Alaco Ground Fire Ladders are widely used by major Fire Departments and Agencies throughout Southern and Northern California other Western states.
Key Features and Benefits
Lightweight ladders - Wood ladders are comparable in weight to similar aluminum ground ladders, and some models actually weigh less.
Wood does not conduct electricity - Wood Ground Fire Ladders save lives and prevent electrical injuries caused by ladder contact with unseen sources of electricity during emergency fire conditions.
Wood does not conduct heat - The insulating properties of Douglas Fir are the same as rock wool. When one end of an Alaco Ground Ladder is exposed to heat or flame, the rest of the ladder remains cool to the touch.
Stays strong at the fire - Alaco wood fire ladders do not become weak or dangerous when exposed to heat. Outside surfaces may char if exposed to extreme heat or flame, but the wood inside retains its original strength.
Stiffness - Alaco wood fire ladders provide more resistance to flexing and bouncing when climbed quickly, allowing firefighters to climb the ladder faster and more safely
